U3A stands for the University of the Third Age.
We are a self-help group based in Torrevieja, (Costa Blanca, Spain). U3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one's life (the third age) after the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility. Anybody in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time. There is no lower age for membership.
Local U3As are learning co-operatives which draw upon the knowledge and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. Our organisation encourages and enables older people to help each other share their knowledge, skills and experience to celebrate the capabilities and potential of older people and their value to society.
Between them, our Interest Groups offer the chance to study many different subjects in varied fields and our approach to learning is "learning for pleasure". There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. Our current activities include History of Spain, Art Appreciation, Computing, Mah Jong, Bridge, Psychology, Book Reading, Spanish, Classical Music Appreciation, Creative Writing, Travel, Walking etc. etc.
More courses are added as new members come along and offer new skills which they are willing to share, on a completely voluntary basis, with other members.
If you wish to join in any of our activities then you should first of all join the Torrevieja U3A or you can visit some of the Interest Groups before joining to assure yourself about what you want. See our Joining page
for more details.
In the meantime, please tour through our website and find out what we are about.
